Happy Mother's Day - "Train Up a Child..." "My mother would host birthday art parties and exhibits for me. What a blessing she has been in my life," Gloria Locke, SCV-Arts director. There were no artists in my family. My mother comes from a long line of those in ministry and the medical profession. She too, a microbiologist doing research at the University of Michigan. She and my dad, were married nine years before having children. When Mom found out she was pregnant with me, she decided to visit all the art museums in the area and remodel the home with fine art prints of Paul Gauguin. She welcomed the first artist in the family. Two years later, my sister was born. Mom facing a divorce, focused her attention on finances during the pregnancy. Guess who graduated from the University of Michigan in three years and works for major corporations as internal auditor and CPA, my sister. Mom encourages women to think carefully while pregnant because the environment they create will have a profound effect on the child they bring into the world. I am thankful that Mom realized this through her research with micro-organisms (which I spent many hours drawing peering the microscope). She also helped me to realize that God will never leave us nor forsake us. Our family heritage of ministers of the Gospel. Works of Christian art adorn the walls of our home. I am thankful to live in America where I can still say the name of Jesus, read the Bible, pray, and go to church without fear that I will be arrested or killed for doing so. Her Mother's Day gift, among other things, that her labor has produced good fruit. This is a great time to ask mother about her pregnancy and how she began to train up a child...for life.
